First-of-its-kind study compares Adelaide with 19 global peers

15 August, 2023

RAA has backed an independent study measuring Adelaide’s performance against global peers, highlighting where our city leads and lags in areas like productivity, business investment, innovation, skills, transport, liveability, sustainability and reputation.

The Committee for Adelaide today released Benchmarking Adelaide, a unique report that looked at 20 peer cities including Adelaide, Austin, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Portland and San Diego.

The report found Adelaide ranked highly for business and investment dynamics, liveability and affordability.

However, the report ranked Adelaide 11th when it came to transport and infrastructure and also trailed on productivity, vibrancy and visitor experience.

RAA CEO Nick Reade said the state’s largest membership organisation supported the research to help us better understand our strengths as a city and learn from others across the globe.

“When it comes to transport and infrastructure, this report validates much of what we already know—that Adelaide is falling behind where it needs to be,” Mr Reade said.

“If we’re serious about Adelaide remaining one of the world’s most liveable cities—particularly as our State grows to 2 million people in the next decade—we need to increase investment in key transport infrastructure and services.

“Without the range of transport options offered in comparable worldwide cities, Adelaide has a high car dependency that means it takes us longer to get from A to B than it does in other like cities—and also increases our carbon footprint.

“We need to make public transport more efficient and attractive to commuters, we need to invest in cycling infrastructure and transition all transport to zero emissions.

“Adelaide ranking 6th in population growth is a positive, but this highlights the need to prioritise investment in our transport system and key infrastructure projects, particularly in high growth areas.

“It’s great to see Adelaide leading the way in renewable energy and RAA is playing its part to drive an even more sustainable future through our EV charging network rollout and solar and battery business.”

The Report was compiled by leading urban intelligence firm The Business of Cities and commissioned by the Committee for Adelaide, RAA, JLL, Deloitte and Hames Sharley to inform Adelaide’s economic recovery post-Covid, generate conversation and as an evidence base to lobby for policy changes and investment.
