Community safety across the state will receive a $70,000 boost with the launch of RAA’s annual Regional Safety Grants program this week.
This year total funds have been increased to $70,000, up 40 per cent from the previous $50,000 available to non-profit community organisations.
RAA Regional Safety Grants are dedicated to improving safety in regional South Australia, home to more than 224,000 RAA members.
Applications for the tenth round of grants open from today, October 4, until November 1.
Reflecting RAA’s commitment to supporting regional communities, the grants have helped fund safety projects, including the provision of firefighting and lifesaving equipment.
RAA Insurance spokesman Shaun Ryan said RAA has provided more than $415,000 in funding to almost 130 community groups since 2013/14.
“We have increased our allocation for these grants in recognition of the important role hard working regional community groups play in making their local areas safer during the pandemic,” he said
“Fundraising for these important projects can be difficult for small regional communities, and RAA’s Regional Safety Grants play an important part in providing much needed funds.
“RAA Insurance has funded grassroots projects for road safety, security, medical equipment and children’s education, alongside our ongoing commitment to bushfire safety projects.’’
Funds last year were used for crucial firefighting and rescue equipment enhancing Country Fire Service and State Emergency Service brigades’ capacity to serve their communities.
“Equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, defibrillators and specialist rescue apparatus will be in place to save lives, and lighting and electrical upgrades have been installed at community centres.” Mr Ryan said.
Other recipients in the previous round of grants included farmers’ groups, regional development bodies, Landcare and Riding for the Disabled.
Last year’s grants have made a difference on Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas, and in the Mid North, Adelaide Hills and South East regions.
Not-for-profit organisations, community groups, schools and registered charities with a project or activity that will improve safety in their local area can apply throughout October for grants ranging from $500 to $10,000.
“With almost a third of our members living in regional SA, these grants are a great way to support those seeking to minimise safety risks in their local communities.” Mr Ryan said
