RAA believes speed limits must be appropriate to the road environment and the adjacent land use. Where travel on a road is unsafe at the current posted speed limit due to the road environment, the priority should always be to upgrade the road where possible to support the existing speed limit. The speed limit should only be reduced where it is not possible to effectively upgrade the road or factors such as adjacent roadside activity require the limit to be lowered for safety .
RAA also believes the number of changes of speed limits along a route should be minimised to avoid driver confusion and there must be appropriate and sufficient signage to reinforce the prevailing speed limit and any changes to it along a route.
