RAA welcomes joint funding plans for Heysen Boulevard

25 August, 2023

The state’s largest member based organisation has welcomed the announcement of the next stage of Heysen Boulevard in Mount Barker, as well as the new State Government body to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with future population and development growth.

The State Government, in conjunction with Mount Barker District Council, are jointly funding a $5 million upgrade to build a level crossing to connect Heysen Boulevard which is currently separated by the Steam Ranger Heritage line.

RAA Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said it was important that infrastructure was in place to support population and housing growth.

“We’re hopeful the establishment of the Housing Infrastructure Planning and Development Unit will help ensure the right infrastructure is in place to support future growth, Mr Mountain said.

“When infrastructure doesn’t keep pace with growth it has significant implications for safety, productivity and liveability as we’ve seen play out in Mount Barker.”

Mr Mountain said the Mount Barker District Council predicts population growth of over 40 per cent by 2036, making infrastructure in this region a key priority for road safety.

“With only 53 per cent of Heysen Boulevard currently completed, we welcome the commitment to construct the level crossing in conjunction with Mount Barker District Council,” Mr Mountain said.

“This will allow the completion of the remaining sections of the Boulevard.

“Completing Heysen Boulevard will facilitate the growing population within the Mount Barker region, ensuring road safety particularly in these new developments.

“The Mount Barker District Council has been seeking a solution for many years, and we’re glad there is now a way forward for the community and local residents.”
